Abstract: Objective: To synthesize the characteristics of dietary behavior changes among patients with type 2 diabetes and provide a reference for developing stage-specific dietary interventions. Methods: Qualitative studies on dietary behavior changes among patients with type 2 diabetes were searched in Chinese and English databases from database inception to April 30, 2026. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research, and the findings were synthesized using the meta-aggregation approach. Results: Eighteen studies were included. A total of 64 findings were extracted and grouped into 10 categories, which were further synthesized into three synthesized findings: initiation, ambivalence, and maintenance of dietary behavior changes. Conclusion: Dietary behavior changes in patients with type 2 diabetes follow a staged process. Identification of patients' current stage and provision of tailored support are recommended to facilitate dietary behavior change and enhance long-term adherence.

Key words: Type 2 Diabetes; dietary behavior; behavioral change; qualitative research; Meta-synthesis
