Application of calf circumference measurement in sarcopenia screening among community-dwelling older adults

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of calf circumference measurement in sarcopenia screening among Chinese community-dwelling older adults, and to provide reference for community medical workers in early identification of older adults with sarcopenia. Methods: A total of 202 community-dwelling older adults were included in this study. With the diagnostic criteria recommended by the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (AWGS) in 2019 as the reference standard, the accuracy of calf circumference measurement in sarcopenia screening among community-dwelling older adults was evaluated by sensitivity, specificity and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: The Area Under ROC Curve (AUC) of calf circumference in elderly male was 0.884 (95%CI: 0.819-0.948). The AUC of calf circumference in elderly female was 0.902 (95%CI: 0.838-0.966). Calf circumference 34.6 cm was the cut-off point for elderly male when the Youden's index reached the highest level, while 33.4 cm for elderly female. Conclusion: Calf circumference measurement is of high value in sarcopenia screening among community-dwelling older adults.
