Evidence summary of safe infant sleeping environment for the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Abstract: Objective: To search, evaluate and summarize the available evidence on safe infant sleeping environment for the prevention of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Methods: We searched BMJ Best Practice, UpToDate, Joanna Briggs Institute Library, Cochrane Library and other database to collect relevant clinical decision support, best practice recommendations, evidence summaries, clinical practice guidelines, technical reports, expert consensus, and systematic reviews. After evaluating the quality of studies and the level of the evidence, we extracted and summarized the available evidence based on their themes. Results: Eleven references were retrieved including 1 technical report, 2 clinical decision support, 1 guideline and 7 systematic reviews. Nine items of evidence were summarized into the following 4 categories: infant sleeping position, location, environment and sleeping aids. Conclusion: Healthcare professionals and infant caregivers are supposed to improve their care activities according to evidences summarized in this study to ensure the safety of infant and prevent SIDS.
