Motivational interviewing training for nurses: a Scoping Review

Abstract: Objective: To identify Motivational Interviewing (MI) training programs targeting nurses by taking Scoping Review. Methods: According to the methodology framework of scoping review, relevant studies in English or Chinese in the databases, including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, were searched systematically up to 15 May, 2020. The included studies were summarized. Results: Totally 33 articles (32 studies) were included. Most of the trainers were Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, training time and methods varied among the studies, and MI competency was the most evaluation index of training. Conclusion: The traing modes and methods of MI training programs for nurses were diversified and there is no best practice standard at present. There is a need to improve MI training system and conduct MI trainings in China to improve the reliability and feasibility of MI conducted by nurses.
