The effect of preventive intervention of perinatal depression on neurological and psychological development of infants

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the effect of preventive interventions of perinatal depression on home nurture environment and the neurological and psychological development of infants. Methods: Totally 148 mothers with mild perinatal depression were randomly divided into two groups. Those in the experimental group were with cognitive behavioral therapy and mother-to-child relationship therapy in late pregnancy and the first postpartum 42 days. Those in the control group were with routine health counselling and mental health guidance in midwifery clinic during the same period. Results: The total scores and the scores of each dimension of Child Home Nurture Environment Scale, Child Nerve Mental Development Scale and Infant Social Response Questionnaire in the experimental group were better than those in the control group at the age of 3 months and 6 months (P<0.01). Conclusion: This cognitive behavior and mother-infant relationship therapy are beneficial for better home nurture environment and development of the neurological, psychological and social adaptive behavior of infants.
