Abstract: Objective: To translate and test the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of Death Self-Efficacy Scale (DSES) among oncology nurses. Methods: The Death Self-Efficacy Scale was translated into Chinese according to the guideline of Brislin Translation Model. Then, the translated version was further adapted based on the results of the expert discussion and pilot study. A total of 755 oncology nurses from seven hospitals in China were recruited and the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the DSES was examined. Results: The Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.942. The item-level content validity index of the Chinese DSES was 0.83-1.00, and the scale-level content validity index/average agreement was 0.98. The split-half coefficient was 0.834, and the test-retest reliability 0.997. Five factors were extracted using exploratory factor analysis which could explain 60.84% of the variance of Death Self-Efficacy. The five factors were named as: daily life and work, being prepared for one's own death, dealing with others' death, caring for dying patients and family members, and physical care around patient death. Conclusion: The Chinese version of DSES showed good validity and reliability, and it can be used among oncology nurses to evaluate their level of the Death Self-Efficacy.
