The effects of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy on psychological distress of patients with cervical cancer receiving chemotherapy after surgery

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the effects of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) on psychological distress, post-traumatic growth and post-traumatic stress disorder of patients with cervical cancer during chemotherapy after surgery. Methods: Seventy-two patients with cervical cancer undergoing chemotherapy post operation were recruited and randomly divided into two groups: control group (n=34) and observation group (n=31). The control group received routine nursing care, while the observation group received mindfulness-based cognitive therapy aside from routine care. Repeated measurement variance analysis was used before intervention, at the end of intervention and three months after intervention to compare and analyze the difference of psychological distress, post-traumatic growth and post-traumatic stress disorder between the two groups. Results: Significant differences were observed in psychological distress, the time effect of post-traumatic growth and post-traumatic stress disorder scores, the group effect and the interaction of time factors and group factors between the two groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: MBCT could relieve psychological distress and post-traumatic stress disorder of patients with cervical cancer receiving chemotherapy after surgery and improve their post-traumatic growth effectively.
