Analysis on the hand hygiene practice trend in Chinese hospitals

Abstract: Objective: To understand the progress of Chinese hospital hand hygiene from 1986 to 2016. Methods: 200 hospitals in 14 provinces and the People’s Liberation Army were stratified sampled and retrospectively investigated. The progress and trends of hand hygiene work in China was analyzed. Results: 99.50% (199) hospitals have established hand hygiene management systems, used alcohol-based hand rub, carried out hand hygiene training, and conducted hand hygiene supervision throughout the hospital. 97.00% (194) hospitals began to use paper towels, 83.50% (167) hand hygiene work was included in hospital performance evaluation, 84.50% (169) had hand hygiene knowledge awareness surveys, 90.50% (181) carried out hand hygiene compliance surveys. The most hospitals began hand hygiene work in 2009 and 2012. Conclusion: The measures for the promotion of hand hygiene in China have been implemented nationwide, and the policy orientation has obviously affected the advancement of various tasks.
