Effects of Ecological Systems Theory based family management intervention among parents of leukemia children

Abstract: Objective: To explore the application effect of Ecological Systems Theory based family management intervention among parents of leukemia children. Methods: Totally 99 parents of leukemia children in a tertiary children's hospital were recruited using convenience sampling method. The experimental group received Ecological Systems Theory based family management intervention for 8 weeks, and the control group took routine care. Parents' disease management ability, family intimacy and adaptability, positive and negative emotions, and social support status were assessed before intervention, after 4 weeks intervenion, and after 8 weeks intervenion respectively. Results: In the experimental group, the disease management ability, positive emotion, objective support, subjective support and social support total score were better than those of the control group at the 4th and 8th intervention point (P<0.05). The support utilization and negative emotion scores also improved by time (P<0.01). There were no significant differences in family intimacy and adaptability scores between the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: Ecological Systems Theory based family management intervention could effectively improve the disease management ability of parents of leukemia children, positively regulate parental emotions, improve the social support of families with leukemia, and help families cope with diseases.
