Psychological experience of pediatric nurses serving as the second victims in nursing adverse events

Abstract: Objective: To explore the rea1 experience of pediatric nurses serving as the second victims in nursing adverse events and provide reference for the further development of organizational support program in hospitals. Methods: A semi-structured interview was used to interview 17 pediatric nurses who experienced nursing adverse events in our hospital. The data was analyzed with the phenomenology methodology. Results: Two themes were extracted, nurses experienced negative disturbed emotions and lacking effective coping strategies in the tough time. Conclusion: Facing the nursing adverse events, the organization should change their strategies from criticizing the second victims to supporting them. Developing supportive program, non-punitive culture and healthy working environment to help nurses get rid of negative emotions as soon as possible, to minimize the harm to nurses, and to ensure the optimal outcome of pediatric patients.
