Abstract: Objective: To investigate the sleep quality and psychological status of frontline nurses fighting Corona Virus Disease 2019(COVID-19), analyze its relationship with the working environment, and propose measures for improvement. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted among the frontline nurses fighting COVID-19 in four hospitals of Wuhan using the Practice Environment Scale (PES), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scale, and the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS).Results: The total score of PSQI for frontline nurses was (7.26±2.30) and the total score of SAS was (52.36±9.05), both of which were higher than the domestic norms. The total score of nursing work environment was (94.36±14.48), which was at the upper-middle level, and the sleep quality and anxiety level had significant negative correlation with the nursing work environment (r=-0.319, P<0.001; r=-0.220, P=0.010). Conclusion: Frontline nurses generally have different levels of sleep and anxiety problems and are negatively related to their work environment. Managers should take active measures to improve the nursing work environment, strengthen communication, and offer corresponding support or establish reward policies to reduce the anxiety levels of nursing staff, improve the sleep quality as well as the nursing efficiency and quality.
