Abstract: Objective: To explore the effects of peer support on quality of life among empty nesters with diabetes mellitus.Methods: Totally 102 empty nesters in community with diabetes mellitus were recruited by convenience sampling method and were divided into intervention group (n=52) and control group (n=50) randomly. The intervention group received the 6 months peer support, while the control group received routine health education. The patients' self-management behavior, HbA1c and quality of life were measured before the intervention, 3 months and 6 months during the intervention. Results: There were significant differences in the self-management behavior and quality of life between the two groups at 3 months and 6 months during the intervention (P<0.05). There were significant differences in the HbA1c between the two groups at 6 months during the intervention (P<0.01). Conclusion: Peer support could effectively improve the self-management behavior and quality of life, and reduce HbA1c in patients with diabetes mellitus.
