Father's care needs of hospitalized newborn: a Meta-synthesis

Abstract: Objective: To systematically integrate the qualitative research on the father's care needs of infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), so as to provide reference for the formulation of father participation care program. Methods: Qualitative studies on fathers' care needs of newborn in NICU were searched from various databases at home and abroad from the establishment of the database to January, 2023, and the results were integrated by Meta-integration method of JBI evidence-based health care centers. Results: A total of 15 studies were included, and 58 research topics were extracted, which were summarized into 11 categories and grouped into 4 integrated findings: information knowledge needs, father's role identification needs, psychological and emotional needs, and social support needs. Conclusion: The specific needs of fathers with newborn in NICU deserve attention, and it is necessary to develop father support strategies and construct father participatory care program to improve the confidence and caring ability of fathers.
