Evidence summary for biofilm identification and management in chronic wounds

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate and integrate evidence related to chronic wound biofilm identification and management, and to summarize the evidences. Methods: The websites of clinical decision-making guidelines, websites of professional association, evidence-based literature resources, and literature databases were searched from inception to July 15th, 2022, to collect relevant clinical decisions, guidelines, expert consensus, systematic reviews, evidence summaries and meta-analysis on the identification and management of chronic wound biofilm. The quality of the retrieved literature was evaluated, and the evidences was extracted and summarized according to the topic. Results: A total of 6 literature were included with 1 guideline, 2 expert consensuses and 3 evidence summaries. The evidence was summarized in 5 topics with identification of early symptoms or signs, wound cleaning, wound debridement, topical antimicrobial therapy, and comprehensive management. Conclusion: The evidence summarized in this study can provide decision supports for the clinical practice of medical staff. In the future, localized intervention programs and processes are expected to promote the translation and application of the evidence.
