A phenomenological study on work motivation and concerns of nurses with occupational low back pain

Abstract: Objective: To describe the feelings of nurses with occupational low back pain, and to explore their work motivation and concerns. Methods: A descriptive phenomenological research method was used in the present study. Fourteen nurses with occupational low back pain in a hospital in Shanghai were interviewed in depth individually. The interview data were analyzed by Colaizzi's 7-step analysis method. Results: Categories regarding the working motivation of nurses with occupational low back pain included: positive team environment, peer support, preposition of patients' needs, and maintainance of income stability. Categories related to concerns included: being lack of family roles and affecting promotion. Conclusion: It is suggested that organizational influence should be fully exerted and human resources should be reasonably allocated; management of nurses' occupational low back pain should be strengthened, prevention and nursing guidelines should be formulated; and specific full-time positions should be set up. These measures are hopefully to improve nurses' work motivation and help nurses reduce the loss caused by occupational low back pain.
