The effects of a comprehensive management program based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory on satisfaction with job of nurses in the emergency department

Abstract: Objective: To explore the effects of a comprehensive management program based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory on satisfaction with job of nurses in the emergency department. Methods: Implemented comprehensive management measures based on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory for nurses in the emergency department of a tertiary hospital in Beijing, that was, implementing performance reforms, providing nurses with a safe and orderly working environment, increasing medical-nursing exchanges and cooperation, and creating a professional atmosphere that respects and cares for nurses, improving the professional development level of nurses, providing a platform for nurses to improve self-realization, and investigated changes in nurses' job satisfaction. Results: The overall job satisfaction of nurses increased from 3.46±1.10 in 2018 to 3.78±1.07 in 2019 and 4.27±0.90 in 2021. The satisfaction with salary and welfare, work itself, workload, family and work balance, relationship with colleagues, management, job recognition, personal growth and development were all significantly improved (P<0.05). The comprehensive quality has been improved among nurses and the complaint rate was decreased significantly. Conclusion: The comprehensive management program based on Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory can improve the job satisfaction of emergency nurses and improve nursing quality.
