Abstract: Objective: To culturally adapt and test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version Areas of Worklife Scale (AWS). Methods: The AWS was translated and adapted according to the standard forward-back translation techniques. Five-hundred nurses from three tertiary hospitals in Qingdao were selected to finish the scale. Item analysis and reliability and validity test were carried out. Results: The critical ratios of all items were between 11.958 and 42.776. The correlation coefficient were between 0.561 and 0.819. Internal consistency of the whole scale was confirmed by Cronbach's α coefficient of 0.894. The Cronbach's α of six subscales were between 0.715 and 0.922. The split-half reliability was 0.738 for the whole scale and 0.702-0.948 for its subscales. The test-retest reliability was 0.850 for the whole scale and 0.710-0.900 for its subscales. The content validity index was 0.933 for the whole scale. Six factors were extracted from the scale by exploratory factor analysis. The cumulative variance contribution rate was 65.979%. The results of confirmatory factor analysis showed that the model fit was good. Conclusion: The Chinese version of AWS shows good reliability and validity, and can be used as a valid tool to assess the areas of worklife of nurses in China.
