Analysis of the mediating effect of professional identity on the relationship between hospital ethical climate and the moral sensitivity of hemodialysis nurses

Abstract: Objective: To analyze the mediating effect of nurses' professional identity in hemodialysis room on the relationship between hospital ethical atmosphere and moral sensitivity, so as to provide a reference for improving the level of moral sensitivity of clinical nurses. Methods: From December 2023 to April 2024, totally 218 nurses in hemodialysis room from 6 general hospitals in Shandong province were recruited by convenient sampling method, and the general information questionnaire, nurse professional identity rating scale, hospital ethical atmosphere scale and nurses' moral sensitivity questionnaire were used to investigate. Results: The scores of moral sensitivity, professional identity, and hospital ethical atmosphere of 218 nurses in hemodialysis room were 40.35±7.45, 118.52±19.58, and 104.64±16.47 respectively. Hospital ethical atmosphere was positively correlated with professional identity (r=0.709, P<0.001) and moral sensitivity (r=0.536, P<0.001), and professional identity was positively correlated with moral sensitivity (r=0.560, P<0.001). Professional identity played a mediating role in the relationship between hospital ethical atmosphere and the moral sensitivity of nurses in hemodialysis room, and the mediating effect accounted for 47.93% of the total effects. Conclusion: The professional identity of nurses in hemodialysis room is a mediating variable of hospital ethical atmosphere and moral sensitivity. Hospital managers can enhance the professional identity of nurses by creating a good ethical atmosphere, thereby improving the moral sensitivity of nurses and improving the quality of nursing services.
