Abstract: Objective: To design and develop specialized popular science creative toys and to evaluate the effects of applying specialized popular science creative toys to preschool children with myopia in the ophthalmology clinic. Methods: A convenience sample of 107 preschool children with myopia who were waiting for treatment in the ophthalmic clinic of a Grade Three Level A hospital in Wuhan was selected from March to August 2019. While the routine waiting procedure was applied to both groups, participants in the experimental group were provided with specialized popular science creative toys in a game area. The compliance rate of children, the anxiety level, the mastery rate of environmental factors affecting myopia and the satisfaction towards the waiting environment of parents were compared between the two groups. Results: During the waiting period in the ophthalmology clinic, none of children in the experimental group cried or requested to look at their parents' cell phones. Their resistance mood was significantly lower than that in the control group (P<0.01). The anxiety score during the waiting period for parents in the experimental group was lower than that for parents in the control group (P<0.05). Meanwhile, parents' mastery rate of environmental factors affecting myopia and the satisfaction towards the waiting environment in the experimental group were both higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: The application of specialized popular science creative toys in the waiting period of ophthalmic clinic can effectively improve the children's compliance rate with diagnosis and treatment, reduce the anxiety level of parents, increase their mastery rate of environmental factors affecting myopia and the satisfaction towards the waiting environment. At the same time, this study effectively achieves the innovation of nurse-led multidisciplinary integration in outpatient management.
