Experience of home dwelling empty-nested older patients adjusting to Multiple Chronic Conditions from the perspective of positive psychology

Abstract: Objective: To explore the experience of home dwelling empty-nested older patients adjusting to Multiple Chronic Conditions (MCCs), and improve the coping ability of MCCs. Methods: A descriptive qualitative approach was conducted and a total of 15 home dwelling empty-nested older patients with MCCs were enrolled for semi-structural in-depth interviews. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis method was used to analyze the data. Results: Based on the PERMA (Positive emotion, Engagement, Relationship, Meaning, Achievement), five themes were extracted: showing positive emotions and having positive psychological capital; engaging in life and taking the initiative to adjust; receiving family and social support and maintaining good interpersonal relationships; seeking self-meaning and realizing self-worth; achieving accomplishments and reaching a positive life. Conclusion: In the management of MCCs, health professionals should pay attention to develop positive psychological capital of home dwelling empty-nested older patients, mobilize their ability of active adjustment and adopt appropriate adjustment strategies, emphasize the support of family and society, encourage the search for the meaning of ego, and finally achieve a positive life.
