Status quo and influencing factors of returning to work in colorectal cancer survivors

Abstract: Objective: To investigate the status quo of returning to work and its related factors in colorectal cancer survivors, and to provide theoretical reference for promoting their return to work. Methods: A convenient sampling with 281 colorectal cancer survivors were included from the outpatients at a tertiary grade A tumor specialized hospital in Hangzhou from December 2021 to July 2022. The patient general information questionnaire, the Chinese Version of the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory-Gastrointestinal Cancer Module, Social Impact Scale and The Work-ability Support Scale were used to collect data. Results: Totally 180 survivors (64.06%) of colorectal cancer had returned to work, the results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that the score of Social Impact Scale (OR=0.89, 95% CI:0.81-0.99), work-ability (OR=1.14, 95% CI:1.02-1.28), willingness to work (OR=1.14, 95% CI:1.02-1.28), supports from families and friends (OR=31.13, 95%CI: 5.29-183.06), employer contacting (OR=11.94, 95% CI:2.28-62.38) were associated with the outcome of whether return-to-work. Conclusion: Medical staff should correctly assess the physical and mental condition of colorectal cancer survivors and their ability to return to work, and more supports from the families, workplaces and the society are expected to, help survivors build confidence and actively return to work.
